Meet Kamran Diba: Architect, museum founder and director, cultural visionary, and one of Iran’s most prominent collectors, Kamran Diba has built a collection shaped by decades of sharp observation and deep knowledge. Known for founding the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art and his keen eye for emerging talent, Diba blends passion with strategy. Here, he shares his no-nonsense advice for collectors—whether you’re just starting or refining your approach.

Kamran Diba’s Tips for Collecting:

1. Collecting is as much about listening as it is about looking—information and insights often come from conversations, as well as visual discoveries.

2. Always buy from galleries to support artists. A lack of representation opportunities can cost young – often very talented – artists their careers. Representation within an established gallery system matters—it helps artists grow and sustain their careers.

3. Educate yourself: Understanding 20th-century art history is essential. Art trends are cyclical; knowing the difference between lasting quality and fleeting fashion is key.

4. Focus on works with staying power. I personally recommend investing in canvases over works on paper.

5. Always buy what you love—you’ll be living with it, possibly forever. 🙂
